How Censorship is Failing Citizens Everywhere

By this point it is well known around the world that countries that have dictators or that have communist governments have a reputation for censoring news that would otherwise be shown to the people.

What a lot of people in countries like the United States don't understand is that a lot of our mainstream media here is censored in its own way. Media channels like NBC and ABC will choose not to run stories that could discredit their backers.

For example, when there were allegations that workers at Disney World were sex offenders, and ABC did not run the story because ABC is owned by Disney. This happens all the time, and is reflected in coverage. So many people have told me that they get a lot of their news from Huffington Post and even Facebook, and that they don't understand why the mainstream outlets don't cover the same topics.

Corporations have tried in the past to use the same tactics to silence independent media outlets, but a lot of times writers like Glenn Greenwald cannot be bought through the same methods as the mainstream media can. This is partially because mainstream media is totally funded by corporations and advertisers, whereas the independent media is funded by donations and funders.

This allows them to put out their real opinions without being censored by advertisers and companies that want people to buy their products and never want to be shown in a bad light.

Government organizations do this as well. In 2008, a blogger that was known for critiquing the United Nations was told by Google News that this posts would no longer be featured on their site.
